In the Federal Census of 1860, J.A. Hitch is indicated in Laurens County, South Carolina (page 257, Brewerton Township) in a household as follows: - J.A. Hitch, age 36, born in SC - Caroline Hitch, age 38, born in SC - Silas Hitch, age 15, born in SC - W.C. Hitch, age 12, born in SC.

Sarah Hitch (Laurens, SC), in a May 9 1864 letter to Young H.E. Hitch writes, "Young Pitts, Leroys brother is somewhere in the armmy. the last account he was in the illenois in the hands of the yankeys. Leroys oldest son is in the armmy also Joseph A. Hitches oldest son is in the armmy. Joseph A.H. has been in it himself but is now at home sick. He got sick at the camp and I fear he never will get well any more."
