WW I registration lists him as medium height and build and a negro, born in Mt. Vernon, MD. He has a wife and two children. World War II Draft Registration lists him as age 51, 6' tall, 182 lbs with a ruddy complexion. Though listed here as "white", it is believed that there is little doubt that this was Columbus J. Hitch, son of Dennis Hitch, African American. The record is from Apr 1942.

According to an article in the Feb 25 1971 Daily Times (Salsibury, MD), Columbus lived alone when his house on Polks Road burned down the day before. His obituary is in the Jun 9 1972 Daily Times and states he was 80, son of the late Dennis and Annie Hitch and the husband of the late Etta Winder Hitch. He had three step children surviving, 3 grandchildren and 10 great grandchildren.
