Elgate. Hitch is listed as a patron for the 1881 Map of Gibson County, Indiana (copy in the DAR Library) where he is noted as a farmer in Patoka, his settlement in the region as 1858 and his nativity as Sussex County, Delaware.

Excerpt from a letter dated February 8, 1931 in "A Hitch Orchard": "I remember 'Elgate' well. When I was a little fellow, he was a big, fat, jolly, old, retired farmer who spent his last days at Patoka, IN, four miles from Princeton - - I can see ELGATE now as he sat in the shade at the side of his modest little home. His frame was so bulky he filled the largest chair to overflowing and his kindly face was circled all around the lower half with a roll of fat, sort of an exaggerated double chin. It gave his face the appearance of being exceptionally broad. He shook all over when he laughed and his smile was more than contagious. He had three children that I know of. Elgate and all of his descendants were Democrats."

In the Federal Census of 1870, "Elgat" Hitch is listed in Gibson County, Indiana (page 367, White River Township) in a household as follows: - Elgat Hitch, age 32, farmer, born in DE - Cynthia Hitch, age 34, born in IN - Elizabeth Hitch, age 5, born in IN - John Hitch, age 4, born in IN - Oscar Hitch, age 2, born in IN.

In the Federal Census of 1880, Elgate Hitch is listed in Gibson County, Indiana in a household as follows: - Elgate Hitch, age 43, born in DE - Cynthia Hitch, age 43, born in IN - John Hitch, age 14, born in IN - Oscar Hitch, age 12, born in IN - Alfred Hitch, age 9, born in IN - Horace Hitch, age 3, born in IN - Nancy Hargrove, age 35, born in IN.
