He was born July 17, 1920, in Springfield, the son of James Edward and Lena May Hitch Rice. He married Cecelia Preval; she died in 1982. He married Corrine Emmett in 1983. Mr. Rice was employed by C&IM Railroad and Mansfield Electric Co., where he retired after many years of services. He was a member of Third Presbyterian Church, where he was a deacon and trustee; DAV Club; Elks Club; and IBEW 193. He was was a Navy veteran of World War II. He was a recipient of the Purple Heart for injuries sustained during D-Day. Survivors: wife, Corrine; a daughter, Mrs. Steven (Susan) Scaife of Springfield; a stepson, Terry Emmett of Springfield; a stepdaughter, Joann Simmering of Greenview; two grandchildren; four step grandchildren; and a sister, Bernice Gallagher of California. Services: 10 a.m. Thursday, Bisch and Son Funeral Home, the Rev. H. Warren Wilkewitz officiating. Burial: Oak Ridge Cemetery.
