Edward Hitch came from England to Whitewater, Wisconsin in about 1851. The family then moved to Palmyra, Wisconsin sometime in late 1857. From records in the Office of the U.S. Bureau of Land Management (BLM), "Edward Hitch of Jefferson County, Wisconsin" purchased land from the La Crosse, Wisconsin office on October 30, 1857 (Certificate No. 8822). The land was described as "the South half of the North West quarter of Section three in Township sixteen North of Range one west in the District of Lands subject to sale at La Crosse Wisconsin containing eighty acres."

Edward Hitch served as a Private with Co. G of the 42nd Wisconsin Regiment, USA in the Civil War.

In the Federal Census of 1880, Edward Hitch is listed in Palmyra, Jefferson Co., WI in a household (pg 14) as follows: - Edwad Hitch, age 60, farmer, born in England - Fanny Hitch, age 61, housekeeping, born in England - Sophia Hitch, age 18, born in WI - Thomas W. Hitch, age 17, born in WI
