Lon Hitch was born to Wilford and Edna (Bowman) Hitch in 1948 in Luverne. He graduated from Luverne High School in 1966 and went on to St. Cloud State University and the University of Minnesota to earn his bachelor's in teaching and master's in education.

He was very proud of the volunteer work his students did every holiday season through the Armful of Love program. Each year his students donated enough money to support holiday gifts to numerous families in need. He was staff adviser for the Leo Club, a student-based community volunteer program sponsored by the Lions Club. He received both the Helen Keller award and the Melvin Jones Fellowship award, the highest form of recognition conferred by the Lions Club International Foundation, for his extensive work with students and community involvement. He was a soccer coach for 16 years with the Lakeville Soccer Club.

Survivors include his wife Sue Feigal-Hitch, Lakeville; two sons, Nathaniel Hitch, a recent graduate of Gustavus Adolphus College, St. Peter, and Justin Hitch, a junior at Lakeville South High School; three sisters, Darlene Woolsey, Sandi Hitch, Betty Schnettler (Jerry Boettcher); one stepbrother, Dale (Linda) Magnuson; two nephews, Bryan and Chad Schnettler; three nieces, Katie Boettcher, Krista and Kari Magnuson; and many family members from Sue Feigal-Hitch's family.
