This is a photograph of Private Frederick Hitch (1856-1913) who won the Victoria Cross for his bravery in the Zulu War of 1879. This picture was taken in 1879 shortly after the battle with his arm still in a sling nursing the wounds he received in the engagement.
This is a picture of the Charles John Hitch (1842-1929) family taken about Christmas 1908 near Fitzgerald, Ben Hill Co., GA. Charles came to this country from England in the mid-nineteenth century to settle originally in El Paso, Woodford Co., IL. He served as a Private and later a Sergeant in Company A of the 4th Illinois Cavalry, USA in the Civil War. E-Mail me if you want to know the names of all the folks in this picture. It was graciously provided to me by William H. Hitch in Atlanta, GA.
Seated are George Jackson Hitch (1808-1892) and his wife Elizabeth Jane (Hitch) Hitch (1810-1889), first cousins who married April 14, 1831 in Clermont Co., OH. They were children of brothers Joseph (1765-1848) and Thomas P. Hitch (1772-1862), respectively. Their families moved from Somerset Co., MD to KY/OH (Thomas about 1799 and Joseph in 1807). Pictured with them, left-to-right, are daughters Hester Jane (Hitch) McGinety (1843-1917) and Mary Annetta (Hitch) Smith (1857-1943).
This is a photo of John Hitch (1849-1920) that accompanied his U.S. Army discharge papers dated January 5, 1872. John was the son of John (1812-1858) and Anna (Riggle) (1815/17-1898) Hitch of Clark County, Indiana. For more information on John, see my write-up under "Historical Documents".
This is a photograph of the Blount County, Tennessee Hitch Family taken about 1906. They descend from Christopher Hitch of Prince Georges County, Maryland and later Fauquier County, Virginia.
