The following is from "A Hitch Orchard": In 1931 James Machlin Hitch and his wife were living in Evansville, IN. Mrs. Hitch was Secretary of the school Board.
In the same reference is an excerpt from a letter from a member of the family:
"Uncle Jim is one of the finest men I ever knew. He has a heart of pure gold. Is tall, straight and now at 76 is as strong, active and healthy as any of his sons. He received a common school education at Patoka, IN. For many years was a farmer in Gibson Co.,IN. near Patoka. About 1908, he and his son Clarence entered the employ of the Gas Company at Evansville and here he has been employed without interruption since that time. He is now a foreman in the construction department. He is staunch Republican, an honest upright, straight thinking individual. The very salt of the earth."
